Flower Girl Baskets and Bouquets

One of the sweetest parts of any wedding is the flower girl. People cannot help but be charmed when they see an adorable little girl all dressed up in a party dress and girls jewelry walk down the aisle tossing petals. These are some ideas for pretty flower girl baskets, bouquets, and more.

The most traditional thing for a flower girl to carry is a basket of rose petals. The basket itself should be scaled to the size of the girl. The younger the child, the more petite the basket. Coordinate the basket style with the formality of the wedding ceremony. A white wicker basket would be sweet for a spring wedding or one held outside. If the child will be wearing a very fancy dress with pearl girls jewelry for a formal indoor wedding, opt for a flower girl basket covered in satin or dupioni.

Many flower girl baskets come with very pretty embellishments, or you can easily add your own decorations. Silk flowers look very nice running around the edge of a fabric covered basket. You can also dress up a basket by wrapping a pretty ribbon around the handle. White ribbon is always nice, or you may wish to choose one in your wedding colors. More whimsical accents can also be terrific, such as pinning a few colorful silk butterflies around the basket’s rim. If your wedding is very formal, you may even wish to add a scattering of twinkling crystals to a satin basket.

Some churches do not permit the tossing of flower petals. In that instance, you can either have the flower girl carry a basket of petals without tossing them, or give her a small bouquet instead. A little posy of blossoms can actually be easier for a very small flower girl to manage than a basket, especially when she can’t toss the petals anyway. A bouquet for a flower girl should be a very diminutive posy. It can be a scaled down version of the bride’s bouquet, or you may wish to design something in your wedding colors using very dainty blossoms. A small cloud of baby’s breath would be a delightful flower girl bouquet, as would a cluster of spray roses. Miniature versions of the bridal flowers will always work very well.

A very cute idea is to have your flower girl carry a pomander of flowers rather than a basket or a bouquet. A pomander is a perfectly round ball of flowers which hangs down from a ribbon. They are absolutely adorable, and also quite easy for a young child to carry. Many types of flowers work beautifully to create pomanders. Classic white and yellow daisies are delightful for summer weddings. Red or orange mums make great pomanders for late summer or autumn weddings, while lime green button mums are fun for a spring or summer ceremony. Add pearl tipped pins to the centers of the mums for a special detail. Roses and carnations are among the other flowers which are particularly suitable for using to make pomanders.

Whether you opt for a basket, bouquet, or pomander for your little flower girl, it is sure to be a beautiful choice. Just remember to coordinate her blossoms to those carried by the bride and to scale the floral arrangement or basket to the size of the child. Everyone will be charmed as your littlest attendant makes her entrance at the wedding ceremony.
